PROFESSIONAL LEARNING TEAM (PLT) WEDNESDAYS: Our schools will continue to open one hour late every Wednesday this school year. This schedule change will happen every Wednesday for all of our schools, except Fir Ridge Campus. Teachers and principals will use this one hour of extra time every week to plan and implement school improvements. Increasing academic achievement for every student will be the focus of these planning periods. This means that every Wednesday this school year, elementary schools will start for students at 9:45 a.m., one hour later than usual. Bus schedules will be one hour later as well.

Supply Fees: Lincoln Park teachers do not have a supply list for students. Instead, there is a one-time supply fee of $20.00 per child. This fee is for consumable supplies that will be used throughout the year. During the summer, teachers purchase supplies in
bulk and are able to buy higher quality supplies at a lower price. This promotes equity because everybody has the same color, size, and style of school supplies. Please provide a backpack for your child to carry his/her classroom work, school letters, etc. to and from home.

You may pay your child’s supply fee by check, cash, or money order. We will accept supply fee payments at our Back to School Night or you can send it with your child on the first day of school. If you send the payment with your child, please put it in an envelope with your child’s first and last name written on the front of the envelope. You will receive a receipt for the paid fee.

SUN Community School: For the first year, Lincoln Park will be a SUN Community School. SUN stands for Schools Uniting Neighborhoods. The SUN Service System (SUN) leads to educational success and family self-sufficiency through an integrated network of social and support services for youth, families and community members. This nationally recognized system of care works to ensure families are healthy so they can champion and support their children.

The SUN Service System collaboration is managed by Multnomah County. The full-service package of services aligned and accessible through SUN includes: academic support and skill development for youth, Early Childhood Programs, Parent-Family Involvement and Education, Anti-Poverty, Health, Mental Health and Addiction, and service access, information and referral services.

We are so excited to become a SUN Community School!

NEW CURRICULUM FOR READING, WRITING, MATH, SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES: We are excited to be implementing a new curriculum this year for all 5 subjects. David Douglas has adopted a curriculum called Forward. Forward is designed to prepare students for college and career. It is aligned with the new Common Core State Standards for English/Language Arts & Mathematics and integrates Thinking and Academic Success Skills such as elaboration, originality, evaluation, metacognition, and collaboration to name a few. We will be sharing more information about our new curriculum at your child’s curriculum night. Each grade level will be hosting a Curriculum Night within the first six weeks of school. Please plan to attend your child’s Curriculum Night to learn more about our new curriculum and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) that all of our students will be learning this year.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR YOU:
1. Doors open at 8:45 a.m./8:20 a.m. for students eating breakfast.
2. School hours for grades K-5 are 9:00 am - 3:15 pm.
3. Full price lunch will cost $2.25 and breakfast will be provided free to all students. Applications for free and reduced lunch are included with this letter.

I’m excited to start my third year at Lincoln Park, and I am looking forward to a great year. I love working in such a fine school with outstanding staff members, great families, and wonderful kids. I feel extremely privileged to be a part of the Lincoln Park community and to work with a staff that is dedicated to a quality education for children.

Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year!

Warmly,

Rebecca Chase
Lincoln Park Principal
